Equine Chiropractic Care
What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a science and an art involving the proper motion and function of the spinal column.  Chiropractic is concerned with the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (the nervous system), as that relationship can affect health and athletic ability.
Clinical goals of Chiropractic Care
  • Relief of pain and clinical signs
  • Return of full function
  • Promote healing
  • Reduce the frequency and severity of injuries
  • Prevent the development of degeneration
What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A certified chiropractic examination begins with static and motion palpation of the spine.  The examiner is looking for abnormal movement or abnormal vertebral position.  When this abnormal condition is located an adjustment is performed.  This adjustment is defined as a very specific, short lever, high velocity, low amplitude, controlled thrust by hand that is directed at specific joints to return normal motion and normal nerve function.
What are the symptoms of spinal problems?
  • Discomfort when saddling
  • Discomfort when riding
  • Wringing tail
  • Pinning ears
  • Refusal or unwillingness to perform
  • Development of unusual behavior
  • Sensitivity to touch or brush
  • Undetermined lameness
  • Bad attitude: biting, unfriendliness
How safe is a Chiropractic adjustment?

A true chiropractic adjustment does not exceed the normal range of motion of the joint.  If done correctly it is impossible to harm the animal.  A true chiropractic adjustment does not involve heavy sedation, extreme restraint or jerking on the legs.

How often should my horse be adjusted?

It depends on the nature, severity and duration of the problem.  A single treatment may be enough for an acute problem.   A series of 3-4 treatments at weekly intervals may be needed for chronic problems.  Conformation and the amount of athletic activity of the horse also determines the number and frequency of treatments.
