Dr. Bain is a native of Wakefield, Virginia, which is in the Tidewater region close by historic Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown, an area steeped in history.  He graduated high school from Hargrave Military Academy (1975), and did his Bachelor of Science in Animal Science at North Carolina State University (1979), and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University (1983).  After graduation from veterinary school he pursued post-graduate training with an internship at N.C. State University (1983-1984), a residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Florida (with a focus on neonatal intensive care) (1984-1986), and a residency in Veterinary Pathology at Kansas State University(1988-1991).  He worked as an Associate Veterinarian in Internal Medicine at Peterson & Smith Equine Hospital in Ocala, Florida, a Lecturer in Large Animal Ultrasound and Cardiology at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, and as an NIH Fellow in Comparative Pathology at Wake Forest University's medical school prior to joining the staff of Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky in 1995, where he was
Dr. Bain is board-certified in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, and the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.  He is active in the veterinary profession; serving on the Board of Regents of the ACVIM and ACVECC, and on the Council on Biologics and Therapeutic Agents of the American Veterinary Medical Association.  In 2004, Governor Ernie Fletcher appointed him to the Kentucky Equine Drug Research Council – a 4-year appointment. He is also an active speaker and author. Most of his time is spent in the areas of equine perinatology, neonatal intensive care, and hyperbaric oxygen

In 2006, he moved “home” to Virginia and worked as an internist and pathologist at Woodside Equine Clinic in Ashland, Virginia, then spent 2008 at Littleton Equine Medicine Center in Littleton, Colorado, before moving to Weatherford, Texas where he works as a Internist and Pathologist at Equine Sports Medicine and Surgery where he works in the Internal Medicine and Critical Care section and oversees the Hyperbaric Medicine Center.
therapy.  In addition to his work in the private practice, he is also Vice-President and Medical Advisor for Equine Oxygen Therapy, a new medical products company that manufactures and distributes hyperbaric chambers for medical applications for equine and companion animal patients.  Most recently, he  completed an MBA degree with a specialization in Strategy and Economics at Ellis College of the New York Institute of Technology in August of 2005.
