Racetrack Intern

Equine Sports Medicine & Surgery, Racehorse Division (“ESMS”) has an opportunity for Equine Veterinarians looking to jumpstart their career in the exciting world of equine racetrack medicine.  The selected individuals will have the opportunity to work on some of the finest equine athletes in sport at premiere racetrack locations around the country.  ESMS interns gain valuable hands on experience working side by side with some of today’s leading equine racehorse veterinarians. This internship runs from June 1, 2024 through May 31, 2025.  Note: early availability is welcomed!

ESMS Racehorse Division is a large multiple-veterinarian equine racetrack practice providing veterinary services at horseracing tracks in New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Iowa, Minnesota and Oklahoma.  We utilize the latest technologies including digital radiology, ultrasound, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, etc., and work on some of the finest Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred racehorses in the world. This position requires travel and extended stays at multiple racetrack locations throughout the southwestern United States.

ESMS Internship Philosophy:

At ESMS, our goal is to expose new graduates to as many facets of equine practice as possible, and close mentorship is available throughout the entire internship. Interns will gain a vast amount of exposure to lameness and advanced diagnostics.  Our racetrack interns have a unique experience given the high volume, busy pace required by racetrack medicine, and will have a variety of valuable hands-on experiences.

We rely heavily on our intern veterinarians to help facilitate case management, perform routine and emergency treatments, and work with more senior team members to provide excellent service to our clients and patients. Our interns will gain a great deal of experience throughout the internship and at the end of the year, be well equipped with confidence, knowledge, and skills to enter private practice, with the potential to stay with ESMS as an associate racetrack veterinarian.

The ESMS interns are a very important and valued part of our team and are essential to the high standard of care and treatment we provide for our patients.

Qualifications:  We seek team-oriented individuals with good horsemanship skills and a strong work ethic, those willing to travel, and those who work well in busy, fast-paced settings.
